- More rear spar work and then onto prepping ribs
So
continuing on with the right rear spar from yesterday; the flanges
of the reinforcement doublers needed to be drilled and whilst it
did not say to dimple the flanges now it seems to make sense to do
this otherwise it may be more difficult later on without
mentioning the thickness off both flanges riveted together.
Dimpling the doubler plate was interesting as using the DRDT-2 or
the squeezer would not work without severely flattening the angle;
so it was out with the setup shown in picture 2. A smart
smack on top of the wood with a hammer and a dimple was formed.
Fitted a treat.

The
doubler towards the tip of the wing requires the outmost holes to
be countersunk and to get in and do the hole closest to the flange
requires a cut off microstop like the one in the picture....helps
to read ahead and look on forums otherwise this would of caught me
out and I would have had to order one to finish the job.
The
plans also state to dimple the flange where the inboard doubler is
and this will be next to impossible with the doubler riveted on.
The
right spar was then final drilled where necessary; deburred;
smoothed and made ready for priming. Then came the left one
.... a few hours later and all done.
There
was still about an 1.5 hours to play with so the next job worth
starting was the mammoth task of cleaning up and polishing all the
edges on all the ribs. The picture shows progress to date
lol !!! much more to be done.
